Tax Season FAQ

Answers to common questions as you prepare to file taxes with your HSA.

Informational purposes only

The following content has been prepared for informational purposes only, and shouldn't be relied on for tax, legal, or accounting advice. Consult a tax professional for your own reporting purposes.

How much can I contribute to my HSA?

Contribution limits are set by the IRS and updated annually, they vary based on whether you have individual or family coverage, and increase if you're 55 or older. (See "Understanding HSA contributions" for the current limits.)

What's the deadline for last-minute contributions?

You generally have until the federal tax filing deadline, typically April 15, to make contributions for the prior tax year. (See "Taxes and HSAs FAQ" for exceptions, including tax extensions and combat zone service.)

What's the penalty if I used my HSA for a non-qualified expense?

If you're under 65 and not disabled, a non-qualified withdrawal is taxed as income and carries an additional 20% penalty. (See "IRS penalties for unsubstantiated or non-qualified expenses" and "Correcting an unqualified expense" to fix it.)

What happens if I exceed the annual contribution limit?

Excess contributions are subject to income tax and a 6% penalty, charged each year the excess remains in the account. (See "Correcting an overcontribution" for how to withdraw it.)

When will my tax forms be available?

Forms are available by January 31. Your 5498-SA will show as "Preliminary" until the final version is posted in May.

Where can I access my tax forms?

You can view your tax forms inside your Health Wallet. (See "Access your tax forms" for the full steps.)

Are my tax forms mailed to me?

Tax forms are provided electronically by default, unless you're signed up for paper communications. To learn more about signing up for paper communications, contact our support team.

Can I pay for medical expenses from previous years with my HSA?

Yes, as long as the expense happened after you established your HSA and while you were eligible for it, there's no deadline to reimburse yourself. (See "HSA reimbursement deadlines" for how establishment date works, and "Eligibility requirements to open an HSA" for eligibility.)

My tax form looks incorrect

If you spot something wrong, contact our support team, we're happy to help. If the issue is a miscategorized transaction, you can also fix it yourself directly in your Health Wallet before the tax filing deadline. (See "Categorize funds leaving your HSA" and "Categorize funds coming into your HSA.")

Keep in mind: recategorizing a transaction won't update your 1099-SA automatically, but it will be reflected on your final 5498-SA form.

To help us look into it quickly, have the following ready:

  • Which part of the form you believe is incorrect (contributions, distributions, rollover amounts, or something else)

  • The specific amount you believe is inaccurate, if applicable

  • Whether you think a transaction is missing from the form

  • Whether you think a transaction was categorized incorrectly (e.g., a distribution shown as a contribution)

I need to correct my address on a tax form

If the only issue is an incorrect address, you don't need a new form. An incorrect address doesn't cause penalties and doesn't affect your taxes, as long as your Social Security number on the form is correct.

Why does my 5498-SA say "Preliminary," or have a watermark?

Your 5498-SA is marked "Preliminary" because you're still allowed to make HSA contributions for the prior tax year up until the April filing deadline, so the form may not yet reflect your final total. Once the deadline passes, we issue a final version in May with the watermark removed. (See "Understanding your 5498-SA" for the full explanation.)

What does Box 2 on my 5498-SA include?

Box 2 reports your total HSA contributions for the tax year, including both contributions made during the year itself, and any contributions made afterward (up until the tax filing deadline) that you designated for that tax year.
